When does Making Tax Digital start
Last updated: 20 May 2026Following changes to the Finance Bill HMRC have announced Making Tax Digital for Self Assessment will begin from 6 April 2026 for those who earned over £50,000 in the 2024-2025 tax period. That's gross income, not income after expenses.
You will be required to provide an Income and Expense submission every three months followed by a full tax return before 31 January the following year.
The expected 2026 submission dates are:
- The first report will be due before 7 August 2026
- The second report will be due before 7 November 2026
- The third report will be due before 7 February 2027
- Your Self Assessment tax return for 2025/26 will also be due by 31 January 2027.
- The fourth report will be due before 7 May 2027
- Final year-end report deadline, before 31 January 2028 in the first year.
